DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite blasting six home runs on the day, Davidson baseball (9-5) split its Saturday doubleheader with fellow 2017 NCAA Regional squad Yale (2-7) at Wilson Field. The 'Cats picked up their second shutout victory of the season, winning 9-0 in Game 1, before stumbling to a 7-5 defeat in Game 2.
Sophomore Ward Coleman led the offense, tallying four hits and seven RBI after launching long balls in both contests. Junior Justin Lebek also had a productive day at the plate, posting five hits (including a homer and a double) and scoring three times. Seniors Cam Johnson and Alec Acosta and sophomore Walker Imwalle also homered.
GAME 1: DAVIDSON 9, YALE 0
The opener was a stalemate until the bottom of the third, when Lebek recorded Davidson's first hit of the afternoon, a single through the right side. He moved up two bases on another single, this courtesy of classmate Max Bazin, and then scored on a ball smoked back up the middle from sophomore Brett Centracchio.
The 'Cats added two the following frame, after freshman Alex Mardiney singled up the middle and Coleman blasted his first career homer to straightaway left field. Acosta blasted his second round-tripper of the year in the fifth to put Davidson up 4-0.
Davidson sealed the victory in the eighth, plating five runs. Lebek led off the inning with a solo shot to dead center, and then the 'Cats loaded the bases by way of three consecutive walks to senior Andrew Born, Johnson, and Centracchio. Acosta then picked up his second RBI of the day, bringing in Born on a sacrifice fly.
Junior Eric Jones got in on the action, singling through the left side to bring home Johnson, and then Coleman again played the hero, finding a left side gap to bring home classmate Greg Lowe (who pinch ran for Jones) and Centracchio to solidify their lead at 9-0.
Junior Allen Barry earned the win, tossing a solid six and a third innings, scattering five hits and striking out six.
GAME 2: YALE 7, DAVIDSON 5
The Bulldogs avoided their second straight shutout right away, scoring in the opening inning off a hit and two errors.
The 'Cats responded just as quickly, plating four runs in the first. Johnson registered his second lead-off homer of the season, and then after Acosta doubled and Lebek was intentionally walked, Coleman went yard once again to give Davidson a three-run advantage.
Yale cut the lead to one the following frame, and then took the lead in the third scoring two off a Davidson miscue and another via sac fly. They added insurance in the sixth courtesy of a solo shot.
The 'Cats threatened multiple times, leaving at least one runner on in the fourth through eighth innings. Imwalle recorded his second homer of the year in the seventh on a massive shot to left field.
THE FINALE
The two teams are scheduled for a Sunday rubber match, slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch. Please check davidsonwildcats.com or the @dcbaseball_ Twitter for changes and updates regarding weather.
