TYSONS, Va. — Davidson's first day at the Atlantic 10 Baseball Tournament included one result — a 7-4 loss to VCU — and two weather delays, the second of which pushed the Wildcats' second scheduled game into Thursday morning.
Now the sixth-seeded Wildcats will play No. 4 George Mason in an elimination game at 9 a.m. at Capital One Park.
In its tournament opener, Davidson (25-27) pushed No. 3 VCU into the late innings, before the Rams pulled away.
Anthony Torreso hit his team-leading 13th home run, a solo shot, in the first inning. And the Wildcats led 4-2 after scoring three runs on two hits and an error in the fourth. Torreso and Fredy Diaz led the Wildcats with two hits apiece.
Starter Cooper Cavanaugh threw 5.2 innings and allowed five hits and three earned runs, while striking out six.
But VCU (32-22) picked up three runs in the eighth, including the go-ahead RBI-single from Nate Kirkpatrick and a two-run double from Alec Warden.
The Wildcats and Rams were delayed by lightning for an hour and 14 minutes when there were two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
Davidson and George Mason were set to begin the day's third game when lightning again intervened and caused the postponement and a four-game schedule for Thursday.
