The Davidson Sports Performance Department supports the school's 21 intercollegiate sports through performance development, injury prevention, and injury rehabilitation.

Associate Athletic Director for Sports Performance, Beth Hayford (Wingate '93), oversees Davidson’s eight other athletic trainers, seven strength and conditioning coaches and one sports psychologist. Hayford has assembled a staff that brings elite experience from the professional, university, and high school levels. The staff works daily in conjunction with athletics department nutritionist, Elizabeth Allred, and Davidson College counselor and sports psychologist, John Brunelle, to emphasize holistic treatment for every need of Davidson scholar-athletes.

The sports medicine and performance facilities are among the best in the region. The 5,000 square foot, Doe Weight Room, serves as the primary location for performance development and is equipped with 8 custom weight racks and platforms. Athletic training rooms are found throughout Davidson campus, with the main offices located in the Vance Athletic Center. At almost 5,000 square feet the Davidson Athletic Training Room features a large treatment area for injury treatment and a separate area for functional rehabilitation. For additional treatment, the wet room holds two 324-gal GRIMM-hydrotherapy hot/cold tubs. Satellite rooms are located at the baseball field and soccer field.

Outside of the athletic training staff, Davidson College rivals top universities in the access to medical attention for scholar-athletes. Team physician, Dr. Robert Lutz, holds a daily clinic in the athletic training offices, with weekly visits from orthopedic specialists, Dr. Robert Morgan.

Dr. Robert Morgan of OrthoCarolina-Concord joined Davidson as their team orthopedic physician in August 2021. A Wofford College graduate, Dr. Morgan completed his Doctor of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He finished his orthopedic residency at Carolinas Medical Center which was followed by a fellowship in Sports Medicine with OrthoCarolina and a focus on the shoulder and elbow.

In addition to serving as Davidson’s team physician, Dr. Morgan has also served as the head team physician for the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, Concord High School, and Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

Dr. Robert Lutz ('87) started in August, 2018 as Davidson College’s Primary Care Sports Physician. During a 30-year career in the U.S. Army, Lutz obtained his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University, and following residency, he became certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine in 1997.

After his retirement from the Army in 2017, he completed a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Duke University. During his fellowship, he worked with college athletic teams (Duke and Elon) and the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL.
