DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women's soccer team overcame a lighting delay of over two hours by coming back to score a pair of goals in the late stages of the first half and held on for a 2-1 victory on a rainy Friday night against Atlantic 10-foe Rhode Island at Alumni Stadium.
Defender Madison See and forward Stephanie Piperno each scored to help the Wildcats (5-12-1, 2-5 A-10) snap a five-game skid, which was the longest since 2003. The victory was also the program's first against the Rams, who fell to 11-4-2 overall and 3-3-1 in league play. In their only other matchup, both schools played to a 3-all draw back in 1994.
The game was delayed with 29:53 left in the first half after a severe weather storm blew through the area and forced a lighting delay for over two hours.
After the length delay, Davidson came out and got the tying and game-winning goals in the last half of the first period behind stellar shots from See and Piperno.
The Wildcats first drew a foul inside the 18-yard box when Maggie Boyd sprinted past the Rams' defense and was tripped up in the middle of the box to set up a penalty kick. Vicky Bruce's PK attempt to the right post was saved by goalkeeper Katie Nickles, one of three on the night for her, but See was there on the far side to gather in the rebound and fire a shot far post to tie things up at 1-all in the 39th minute. It was the junior's first collegiate goal.
Then right before halftime, the Wildcats set up a corner kick with 53 ticks left. Bruce sent a ball into the box and after it was knocked around, Piperno gathered in the loose ball and nailed a shot top-shelf to the left corner for her fourth goal of the season and a 2-1 lead. The game-winner was the senior's second on the year.
Rhode Island had struck first on Ellie Bailes deflection off Sarah Warjas' shot from about 23 yards out with 12:14 gone off the clock, before the lengthy lighting delay.
The Rams would come out aggressive in the second period, firing off seven shots and earning six corner kicks, but goalkeeper Rachel Locke and the rest of her defensive teammates halted any thoughts of sending the game into overtime by playing shutout ball the final 45 minutes. Locke finished with five saves, getting a pair in the second half.
The shots went 13-9 to Rhode Island, which also held a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks.
The Wildcats conclude the regular season with a Senior Day game Sunday against Massachusetts at 3:30 p.m.
