DAVIDSON, N.C. — Looking to wrap up the regular season in winning style, the Davidson women's soccer team will host Atlantic 10 foes Rhode Island and Massachusetts this Friday and Sunday as part of Senior Day weekend at Alumni Stadium to close out the year.
The Matchup
Davidson (4-12-1, 1-5 A-10) concludes the regular season with home contests against the Rhode Island Rams (11-3-2, 3-2-1 A-10) Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and UMass (5-7-4, 3-2-1 A-10) Sunday at 3 p.m. Both games are part of a doubleheader with the men's team this weekend.
Senior Day
Sunday's game will also be Senior Day for the Wildcats' five seniors, Zoe Hayes, Rachel Stelter, Stephanie Piperno, Rachel Locke and Becca Fisher. The team will honor them prior to the start of the contest at 3 p.m.
The All-Time Series/Last Meetings
The Wildcats and Rams are playing for just the second time. They both matched up in 1994 in Rhode Island and played to a 3-all draw. Davidson and UMass have never faced each other.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson (4-12-1, 1-5 A-10) dropped its fifth straight contest, falling at home last weekend to Saint Louis, 2-0 ... the five-game skid is the program's longest since 2003 ... of the 'Cats' 12 defeats, seven have been by a single goal, with six of those being 1-0 decisions ... the Wildcats' last goal came in the 58th minute at St. Bonaventure, Oct. 3, a span of 502 scoreless minutes ... leading the offense is Stephanie Piperno (3 goals, 1 assist) and Vicky Bruce (1 goal, team-best 3 assists) with seven points each ... Rachel Locke, who ranks third all-time in the Wildcat record books in both saves (315) and shutouts (18), is tied for second in the league with 81 saves ... she is seventh with four shutouts and carries a 1.20 goals against average into the weekend ... the senior has 23 career wins ... Davidson is 2-5-1 at home this year ... head coach Greg Ashton won his 176th career game, 105th at Davidson, in a road victory at the Bonnies, Oct. 3 ... he is 14 wins away from becoming the program's all-time winningest coach ... Davidson is playing its first year in the Atlantic 10 after a 20-year run in the SoCon (116-58-30, three regular season titles and four tournament titles) ... the Wildcats return 16 letterwinners, including eight starters ... the 'Cats were picked to finish 12th in their first year in the A-10.
Scouting the Rams
Rhode Island (11-3-2, 3-2-1 A-10) sits in a tie for fourth in the league standings after going 1-1 last weekend ... the Rams earned a 1-0 double-overtime win at Duquesne and then fell Sunday at home to St. Bonaventure, 2-1 ... URI is fifth in the league in goals with 24 ... Chelsea Gates scored the game-winner Friday vs. Duquesne, while Dariann Sellitti had the lone goal Sunday ... pacing the offense is Nicole Brennan with 16 points on five goals and six assists ... Samantha Leyh has 13 points ...in goal, Katie Nickles has started all nine of her games, while Reilly Lindsey has seen action in seven games with six starts ... Nickles has 49 saves and a 0.61 goals against average ... URI is 4-1-1 on the road ... the Rams were picked 13th in the preseason A-10 poll ... they return 19 letterwinners, including seven starters from last year's 6-12 team (1-7 A-10).
Scouting the Minutewomen
UMass (5-7-4, 3-2-1 A-10) is tied with URI for fourth in the league standings ... it went a perfect 2-0 last weekend, tallying home wins against the Bonnies (2-0) and the Dukes (2-0) ... the minutewomen have won three of their past five games ... Jackie Bruno had a pair of goals over the weekend, while Natalie Persussault scored a goal and assisted on another in Sunday's win ... leading the 14-goal attack of UMass is Bruno with six goals and 12 points ... four players are tied with two assists each ... UMass is 1-5-2 on the road, with its lone win coming against Bryant, Aug. 28 ... UMass was picked fifth in the preseason league poll after going 3-3-2 last year (7-9-4 overall) ... head coach Ed Matz is in his fifth year and has collected 43 wins during his tenure.
