DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball (11-5) picked up its second straight double-digit victory Wednesday, downing (RV) North Carolina Central (12-6) 10-2 at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats used just six hits to do damage, led by sophomore Ward Coleman's two doubles. Junior Eric Jones also doubled, and freshman Ruben Fontes recorded his first collegiate hit in his first career at bat, a bloop single to shallow right field.
Veteran Connor Gordon improved to 3-2 on the season, tossing four frames and striking out three.
Davidson's first run came by way of a NCCU miscue in the second, as junior Justin Lebek reached via error and then came home on Coleman's first two-bagger.
Sophomore Zach Nussbaum walked to lead off the third, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single up the middle from classmate Brett Centracchio. Senior Cam Johnson added a run in the frame after he too reached via free pass, then came home on a fielder's choice from Lebek.
The 'Cats plated four runs in the fourth, taking advantage of three walks, a hit-by-pitch, a deep single to right field for Johnson and a two-RBI double for Jones.
Davidson solidified its lead by scoring three times in the sixth, one run coming off another Eagles error and the other two by way of Coleman's bases-clearing double as he brought in senior Alec Acosta (who reached on an error) and Jones, who boarded by way of a fielder's choice.
NC Central avoided the shutout, scoring in the fourth on a sac fly and again in the seventh off two singles.
The Wildcats remain at Wilson Field this weekend, welcoming Mount St. Mary's for their final non-conference clash of the season.
