DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball (12-5) picked up its third consecutive victory Friday, downing visiting Mount St. Mary's (3-8) 9-1 at Wilson Field in the opening of their final non-conference series of the season.
Sophomore Brett Centracchio blasted his fourth homer of the season and drove in three as part of a two-hit day. Junior Eric Jones also tallied two hits, as he and senior Andrew Born each picked up two RBI. Senior Cam Johnson, freshman Alex Mardiney, and Centracchio all scored twice.
The 'Cats were delivered another solid pitching performance from starter Allen Barry, who had four consecutive three-up, three-down frames and finished with six innings and six strikeouts. Classmates Casey Sutherland and Austin Leonard combined for three shutout frames from the pen, striking out four and surrendering zero walks.
Davidson exploded in the first inning, plating five runs. The 'Cats have now scored in the first inning in 11 of their 16 contests. Johnson led off the frame with a single through the right side, coming home the next batter courtesy of Centracchio's long ball.
Three straight hit-by-pitches allowed junior Justin Lebek, sophomore Ward Coleman, and Mardiney all to board, all three later coming home. Lebek and Coleman scored via Born's left side gap single, and Mardiney on a wild pitch.
Johnson scored again the following frame, reaching on yet another hit-by-pitch, stealing second, and then coming home on a triple from Jones.
In the seventh, Centracchio, who was again beaned, took second after teammate Alec Acosta was also hit, then came home on a left-side single from Jones.
Davidson added its final two runs of the contest in the eighth after Mardiney, who was walked, scored on a bunt single from junior Max Bazin, and then Bazin himself came home on a single to right field from Centracchio.
The Mount avoided the shutout, using two hits and an error to score in the sixth.
The 'Cats and Mount St. Mary's face off in a Saturday matinee, scheduled for 2 p.m.
