ARLINGTON, Va. – On a beautiful Friday afternoon just minutes from our nation's capital, Davidson baseball cruised to victory over league foe George Washington at Tucker Field.
Davidson improves to 22-17 overall and 9-7 in league play, while GW drops below .500 at 21-22, 5-8 A-10.
Three 'Cats delivered multi-hit performances, while three brought in three RBI each. The bats were led by sophomore Justin Lebek, who doubled and homered while bringing in three and scoring three times. The long ball was his third in his last four games. Junior Alec Acosta tallied three hits and scored twice, and classmate Cam Johnson also recorded two hits with a double. Seniors Will Robertson and Jake Sidwell each collected three RBI; it is Sidwell's second straight multi-RBI contest.
With his double, Robertson has now tied the program-record with a 17-game hitting streak and extended his reached-base streak to 34 games, seventh best all-time.
The team was paced by another strong outing from redshirt senior Durin O'Linger, who tossed eight innings, fanning five and allowing no walks, earning his fifth win of the season and third straight. Fellow veteran Cody White faced just three batters in his inning of relief, striking out two.
The 'Cats broke through in the third, plating three runs off back-to-back doubles and a couple of scattered singles. Senior Tyler Agard singled to left field, and moved to third on a Johnson double. Robertson followed up with his own two-bagger, bringing both of them home. Acosta then connected on a liner, also to left, to allow Robertson to score.
Davidson began adding cushion in the following frames, scoring once in the fourth, two times in each the sixth and seventh, and four times in the ninth.
In the fourth, sophomore Eric Jones eventually scored after reaching on a full-count walk and coming home on a single crushed back up the middle from his classmate Max Bazin.
GW got on the board in the bottom of the inning, using a double and single. The Colonials plated another run in the sixth, scoring on a double play.
Senior Brian Fortier, who also recorded two runs on the afternoon, walked to begin things in the sixth, and moved to third on Lebek's double. Both came home after Sidwell sent the ball screaming back up the middle.
After Acosta led off the seventh with another single to left center, Lebek mashed a two-run monster off the scoreboard in right field to put the 'Cats up 8-2.
The 'Cats plated four runs in the top of the ninth, after Acosta and Fortier both singled, Jones walked, and then Lebek too took a bases-loaded free pass to bring in Acosta. Fortier came home on a sacrifice fly from Sidwell, and then after Bazin walked to load them once again, an error brought Jones home. Lebek scored the final run of the inning, also via walk.
The 'Cats and Colonials return to action Saturday, slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
