DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball battled on Wednesday night, but dropped a 12-6 contest to No. 17 Wake Forest at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats drop to 21-17 on the year, while WF moves to 30-13.
Junior Alec Acosta recorded three hits in the contest, including a double and scored, and senior Will Robertson and junior Eric Jones each tallied two hits apiece in the affair. Robertson doubled twice, marking the fourth time in his career (and third time this season) that he's registered two doubles in the same game. He has now collected an extra base hit in 11 of his last 13 games. Robertson also matched himself for second all-time in program history with a 16-game hitting streak.
Sophomore Justin Lebek homered, blasting his fourth of the year and second in the last three games. Senior reliever Cody White struck out the side in a scoreless inning of relief, while sophomore Andrew Ashur also fanned three in an inning of work.
The game was locked at a stalemate until two solo shots in the fourth inning put Wake up 2-0. The 'Cats tied it up in the bottom of the fifth, after sophomore Max Bazin led off the frame with a walk (he ended up reaching via base on balls three times in the game) and came home courtesy of Robertson's first double. Robertson then plated the equalizer after Acosta ripped a single back up the middle.
The tie was short lived, as Wake took advantage of back-to-back-to-back Wildcat errors to plate six runs in the sixth.
Davidson started to chip away at the lead, scoring in the bottom of the sixth off of Lebek's homer and three times in the seventh. Robertson led off with another double, coming home as Acosta pushed one to almost the exact same spot in left center. After Jones walked to put two on, senior Jake Sidwell got in on the two-bag action, pulling the ball to right field to bring both Jones and Acosta and cut the deficit to 8-6.
Wake then added two runs in each the eighth and ninth frames to solidify the 12-6 victory.
The Wildcats return to action Friday on the road, facing off against George Washington in a three-game league set in our nation's capital.
