DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball picked up its second sweep of the year, downing nonconference foe North Carolina A&T in both contests Saturday at Wilson Field. The 'Cats picked up opening game win 12-1, and sealed the sweep with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.
Both of the Wildcats starting pitchers picked up the wins; junior Josh Smutzer moved to 5-2 on the year after seven innings where he allowed just one walk and struck out three, and classmate Evan Roberts went 7.1, fanning five and allowing no walks en route to his second W of the season.
Sophomore Justin Lebek led the hitting efforts for Davidson, picking up two hits in each game. He tallied four RBI as he homered and doubled. Classmate Eric Jones turned in a career-high five RBI after registering his second two-homer game of the season, launching two two-run shots in Game 1. Both scored three runs on the day.
Senior Westin Whitmire earned his eighth save of the season in Game 2 and now just sits seven saves away from first place all-time in program history (25).
GAME 1: DAVIDSON 12, NC A&T 1
Seniors Tyler Agard and Brian Fortier joined Jones and Lebek, all turning in two hits each. Fortier also collected two RBI and scored twice.
Davidson took the lead right away, plating a run in the first after veteran Will Robertson raked a double to left center and came home after Fortier followed that up with a double of his own. Robertson had at the time collected an extra-base hit in 10 of his last 12 games, and his fifth in a row.
A&T took advantage of a double and single to left center in the third inning to plate the equalizer, before the 'Cats would explode for 11 more runs over the course of the contest.
They scored four times in the bottom of the third, courtesy of Jones' first long ball that also brought Fortier (who was hit-by-pitch) home, and then freshman Zach Nussbaum and Agard each singled. They both came home after the Aggies delivered three straight walks.
Leading 5-1, the 'Cats continued to pound. Lebek homered in the fifth (his third of the year), and Jones again brought Fortier home on another round-tripper in the sixth. Agard flied out to score Lebek, who had reached via error.
They added another two runs in the seventh and the final run in the eighth to top off the 12-1 win.
GAME 2: DAVIDSON 5, NC A&T 3
Davidson took advantage of timely hitting and an Aggie error to secure the win, being outhit by A&T 10-6.
They carried the momentum over from Game 1, plating four runs in the opening frame. Junior Cam Johnson walked to lead off the game, and Robertson joined him on base after singling up the middle. Fortier walked to load the bases, and then Johnson came home after Jones cracked a single back up the middle. The rest of the 'Cats crossed the plate after a monster double from Lebek, who would have had a triple had his feet not got crossed in the basepaths.
The lead remained at four until the sixth, when a two-out single ripped up the middle cut the deficit in half and put the Aggies within striking distance.
The 'Cats quickly added a run back in the bottom of the frame, after Lebek walked and then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Classmate Max Bazin stroked a ball to right center to bring what would ultimately turn out to be the necessary and game-winning run.
The Aggies continued to chip, scoring once in the eighth and threatening in the ninth before Bazin flashed some leather, catching a liner back up the middle for the final out.
