GREENSBORO, N.C. – Redshirt senior Durin O'Linger tossed a gem Friday to get the opening 6-0 win of Davidson's nonconference series with in-state foe North Carolina A&T. O'Linger threw a complete game, the first for the Davidson staff this season, and propelled the 'Cats to their first shutout of the season.
The series has been altered due to weather, as the two teams will now play a doubleheader Saturday at Wilson Field.
The Wildcats improve to 19-16 on the year, while NC A&T slips to 20-17. The senior class, consisting of O'Linger, outfielders Will Robertson and Cameron Marshall, infielders Brian Fortier, Tyler Agard, and Lukas Pracher, pitchers Cody White, Westin Whitmire, and Chase Plebani, and catcher Jake SIdwell become the winningest class in program history with 104 wins.
O'Linger matched his career-high, striking out nine. He scattered just three hits, and allowed zero walks, facing just two batters over the minimum. The last time he gave up no walks was also in a complete game victory, last season at Saint Louis where the 'Cats won 1-0.
The Davidson bats were led by a pair of three-hit days in junior Cam Johnson, who turned in his fifth of the year, where he homered twice and drove in three, and Robertson, who also scored twice. With his double in the first inning, he has now collected an extra-base hit in nine of his last 11 contests. Sophomore Eric Jones recorded two hits, including a solo shot for his sixth of the year.
The 'Cats broke out right away, as Robertson doubled and took advantage of a two-base wild pitch to plate the first run of the game. In the third, Johnson led off with what was at the time his third round-tripper of the season, and Robertson then singled to get back on base. He advanced to second on a bunt single from junior Alec Acosta, and then moved to third on a single from Fortier. The Aggies were then the recipients of a double play, but Robertson came home to give the 'Cats a 3-0 cushion.
Johnson went back-to-back, homering in the fourth for his first ever multi-HR game of his career. The two-run shot also brought in Agard, who was on via walk.
Jones completed the 6-0 shutout with his own solo shot in the fifth. The 'Cats have now delivered two three home run games this season, after doing so earlier this month at La Salle.
The teams will reconvene Saturday in a doubleheader, with the first game slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.
