Coming off its first series sweep of the season, the Davidson baseball team will host Gardner-Webb at Wilson Field Tuesday evening.
Â
First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m., and it's the teams' second meeting of the season.
Â
LATEST ON THE 'CATS
• Davidson is 9-13 overall and atop the Atlantic 10 Conference standings with a 5-1 league record, following the three wins over VCU.
• Infielder Eli Putnam's emergence is a key reason why: the redshirt junior infielder was named A-10 Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .800 (12-for-15), with two doubles, five home runs and 14 RBIs in the VCU series. He had a two-homer game on Friday, a three-homer game on Sunday and went 4-for-5 in each series game. For the week, which also included a loss to N.C. State, he hit .765 (13-for-17).
• On Tuesday, Putnam was named the Golden Spikes Award Player of the Week and the Perfect Game National Player of the Week.
• Putnam is hitting .371 and is one of five Wildcats batting over .300, including Jamie Daly (.347), Chris Schuchart (.314) Michael O'Shaughnessy (.306) and Cider Canon (.304). Jack Cotrone is right there as well (.299).
• Putnam leads the team with seven home runs, 23 RBIs and 58 total bases.
• Noah Jouras has hit a team-high seven doubles, while Cooper Collins is the only Wildcat with multiple triples (2).
• Following the matchup with Gardner-Webb, the Wildcats will play their next eight contests on the road, including A-10 series at Dayton and Fordham and midweek matchups at Duke and N.C. A&T.
• Freshman right-hander Jacob Vokal (3.44 ERA) is scheduled to make his fourth start.
Â
SCOUTING THE RUNNIN' BULLDOGS
• Gardner-Webb is 11-14 overall and 1-5 in the Big South Conference.
• The Bulldogs have lost their last five games, including three at league foe Presbyterian over the weekend.
• Ryan Kennell (.347 avg) and Dale Francis Jr. (10 HRs, 34 RBIs) lead the offense.
• Gardner-Webb topped Davidson 12-2 in seven innings on Feb. 18.
