With exams and a 12-day break between games behind them, the Davidson Wildcats return to the Wilson Field diamond Friday evening to open a three-game series with the George Mason Patriots.
Â
The Wildcats and Patriots will meet at 5 p.m. Friday, in a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and in a 1 p.m. game Sunday. It's the final four-game Atlantic 10 Conference series the Wildcats (22-20, 6-10 A-10) will play at home this season.
Â
"We're looking forward to playing an opponent this weekend," said coach Rucker Taylor. "We've had some good intrasquads the last week, but it will be good to see a different uniform. We've seen a little extra bounce in guys as exams have finished. We've had some nice post-exam runs in previous years. Hopefully we can do that again."
Â
In their last outing, the Wildcats scored a season-high 17 runs in a 10-run win at A-10 foe Richmond May 2 to earn a series split. Seven Wildcats drove in runs, and Garrett Browder hit a grand slam to left for his first career home run. Ruben Fontes and Ryan Wilson also homered, with Fontes knocking his team-leading 12th shot of the year.
Â
Davidson's last home game was a 5-4 win over George Washington on April 25. An eighth-inning Trevor Candelaria sacrifice fly drove in Michael Carico for the game-winner.
Â
Prior to Friday's game, the Wildcats will honor their five graduates: outfielder/DH Fontes, infielder Alex Fedje-Johnson and pitchers Jake Biederman, Pete Bloomberg and Jacob Walker.
Â
