DAVIDSON, N.C. – In its penultimate midweek at Wilson Field of the season, Davidson baseball won its second walk-off in its last four games, defeating Charleston Southern 4-3 Wednesday.
The 'Cats improve to 28-15 on the year, while Charleston Southern drops to 13-30. The 28 victories by the Wildcats matches their win totals from both the 2015 and 2016 seasons, the third-most for a single season in program history. Davidson also recorded 28 wins in 1988.
Senior Alec Acosta led the offense as the only multi-hit performer on the day, turning in three RBI and registering the walk-off hit.
The combined pitching staff of starter Jaret LaCagnina, freshman Pete Bloomberg, and senior Josh Smutzer worked six shutout innings. LaCagnina tossed three frames, striking out four and surrendering no walks.
After freshman Alex Mardiney pinch hit to lead off the ninth and was plunked, he quickly moved to third after back-to-back bunt singles from the veteran duo of Andrew Born and Cam Johnson.
Enter Acosta, who took three straight balls before battling in a six-pitch at bat and ripping the ball to deep right field, bringing home Mardiney for the game winner.
The contest was a stalemate through four before Davidson broke the blank in the fifth. Junior Max Bazin singled down the third base line for the Wildcats first hit of the game, stole second, and then took third on a wild pitch. He came home on a chopper down to first from the man of the night, Acosta, and put the 'Cats on the board.
Charleston Southern stole the lead in the seventh on two hits and an error, but Davidson fired back to regain control in the bottom of that frame. Sophomore Zach Nussbaum led off the frame ripping the ball to left field for a single, replaced then by freshman pinch runner Luke Burton. Burton moved to second on a walk to Born, then scored after Johnson reached on a sacrifice bunt turned throwing error. Later in the inning Born came home on a sacrifice fly from Acosta.
The Buccaneers kept battling, plating a run on a ball four wild pitch in the eighth, and threatened with a man on third in the ninth.
Davidson heads out on the road this weekend, returning to St. Louis for the first time since claiming its Atlantic 10 title last May. They face league-leaders Saint Louis in a three-game set beginning Friday.
