SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS
Saint Louis enters the weekend with just one loss in conference play, a 4-2 defeat to VCU. The Billikens, however, have only faced one team from the top half of the league standings. The squad has two above .300 hitters in Jake Garella and Nick Reeser, hitting at .339 and .333, respectively. The squad however has accumulated nearly 100 doubles (97) and boasts a league-best .443 slugging.
The Billikens finally overtook the 'Cats for the league lead in ERA this past weekend, currently boasting a 3.36 ERA. Each member of their weekend rotation has at least seven wins, while the Friday/Sunday duo of Miller Hogan and Drew Reveno top the league individually in the statistic.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Davidson holds the narrow advantage over the Billikens, 6-5. The 'Cats last defeated SLU in a thrilling extra-inning 8-7 victory at the 2017 A-10 Tournament, catapulting the 'Cats into the title game. Then-sophomore Eric Jones went 4-for-5 with a double and scored twice in the contest, and classmate Justin Lebek also doubled in a 3-for-4 day, driving in two. The 'Cats also took two-of-three from SLU on Senior Weekend last year, nearly pulling off the sweep before surrerendering six runs in the ninth in Saturday's contest.
A RECORD ON THE HORIZON
Junior Eric Jones is on pace to break the single-season RBI record, currently with 56 and needing just seven more. The record, first set in 1985 and then tied in 1993, is set at 61. He ranks sixth in the nation in the statistic, and has led briefly for a portion of the season. Jones is also a threat for the A-10 Triple Crown, ranking in the Top Five of the league in batting average, home runs, and RBI.
LAST TIME OUT AT WILSON FIELD
Davidson won its second walk off in its last four games, defeating Charleston Southern 4-3 Wednesday at Wilson Field. With bases loaded in the ninth and no outs, senior Alec Acosta ripped the ball to deep right, singling in freshman Alex Mardiney who had pinch-hit and was then hit-by-pitch. Acosta drove in three of the 'Cats runs in the contest and was the only multi-hit performer for the squad. The combined pitching efforts of starter Jaret LaCagnina, freshman Pete Bloomberg, and veteran Josh Smutzer went for six consecutive shutout innings.
