ST. LOUIS – Davidson baseball ignited early, taking a shutout into the eighth inning against Atlantic 10 leaders Saint Louis, and holding on to defeat the Billikens 4-3 Friday at Billiken Sports Complex. The win is the ninth straight Friday night victory for the 'Cats.
Davidson improves to 29-15, 13-6, while Saint Louis drops to 29-16, 14-2. The 29 wins ties for the second-most in a single season for Davidson, but is the most wins by a team during the regular season in program history.
The offense was led by sophomore Brett Centracchio, who turned in the first multi-homer game of his career, blasting two solo shots. Freshman Alex Mardiney was the other big contributor, driving in the other two runs via a double and a sac fly. Sophomore Ward Coleman also had two hits.
Senior Allen Barry was dynamic through seven frames, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. He surrendered a homer and a walk to begin the eighth, but still improved to 8-1 on the season. Classmate Casey Sutherland picked up his fifth save of the year, tossing the final two outs both by way of punch out.
Davidson broke through in the second, when Centracchio took the second pitch of his at bat and launched the ball to right center.
The 'Cats added cushion that inning after junior Justin Lebek doubled down the right field line, and Mardiney followed suit with a two-bagger the opposite way to bring him home.
In the fourth, junior Eric Jones led off the frame with a single, then moved to second on a walk to Centracchio. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Mardiney's sac fly to put the 'Cats up 3-0.
Centracchio homered for the second time to lead off the sixth, again taking the second pitch and blasting the ball to right center.
The shutout was spoiled in the eighth with a solo shot by Billikens' second baseman Cole Dubet, and then SLU pressured again in the ninth, using four singles to bring home a pair of runs before Sutherland shut them down. He was given help, as fellow junior Austin Leonard entered with two on and no outs and worked quickly to get a foul out down to first.
Davidson and Saint Louis will meet again Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
