ARLINGTON, Va. – Davidson baseball suffered a heartbreaker Sunday afternoon, after a three-run rally in the eighth inning allowed George Washington to steal the 4-3 win and the series at Tucker Field.
The 'Cats slip to 22-19 and are .500 in league action at 9-9, while the Colonials move to 23-22 and 7-8 in A-10.
The duo of veterans Will Robertson and Brian Fortier continued to lead the offense for the 'Cats, as Robertson was the lone multi-hit performer of the day, and Fortier jacked his 12th homer of the season. Robertson collected two hits, including a triple, making it his 14th game in the last 16 to collect an extra-base hit.
Junior Cam Johnson doubled, and the sophomore pair of Justin Lebek and Eric Jones turned in the other Wildcat hits.
Davidson broke the game open early, plating three runs in the opening frame. After Robertson tripled, his second of the season, Fortier smashed the ball over center field, giving the 'Cats a 2-0 lead. They were able to add another run after sophomore Max Bazin was walked with bases loaded, allowing Jones to score.
GW cut the lead to two in the fourth inning, scoring once after a double and single.
The Colonials then rallied in the eighth, dropping three straight bloopers into the outfield all with two outs to steal the lead, the win, and the series.
The 'Cats threatened multiple times, leaving runners on in five innings, including bases loaded in the first and two on in the eighth.
Davidson returns to action Tuesday, hosting Presbyterian for a 6:00 p.m. Tuesday tilt.
