DAVIDSON, N.C.—Despite leading in the contest on two separate occasions, Davidson baseball dropped another tough loss Tuesday, falling 8-6 to Presbyterian at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats slip to 22-20 on the season, while the Blue Hose move to above .500 at 24-23.
Veteran Brian Fortier collected three hits in the affair, including a double, and tallied three RBI with a run. Classmate Will Robertson extended his program-best hitting streak to 20 games after blasting a two-run shot at the left field line. Fortier has now recorded five three-hit performances this season, while Robertson has registered an extra-base hit in 15 of his last 17 contests.
Presby got on the board right away, taking a 2-0 lead on a walk and a homerun to left center.
The 'Cats quickly topped them, as leadoff man Cam Johnson singled up the middle and Robertson walked to put two on. Fortier then pushed the ball into the left field corner, doubling home both. He, too, then came around to score after freshman Brett Centracchio, who made his first career start at second base, sent a laser back up the middle.
Fellow rookie Alex Fedje-Johnson also made a career first, tallying his first collegiate hit with a ball he poked through the left side in the second inning. Robertson then congratulated him by homering, putting the 'Cats in control at 5-2.
The Blue Hose tied it the following frame, plating three runs off a solo homer and a string of gap singles.
Davidson regained the lead in the fifth, after junior Alec Acosta singled through the left side, and Fortier repeated his location, singling the ball into left field and bringing Acosta home for a 6-5 margin.
After a walk and a bunt single, a double down the left field line allowed Presby to take the lead for what was ultimately the final time. They added an insurance run in the eighth to solidify the 8-6 win.
Another rookie who delivered in strong fashion was catcher Zach Nussbaum, who caught two runners trying to steal.
The 'Cats return to action Friday, welcoming Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis in a critical league matchup.
