THE SERIES
Davidson and Saint Louis will be meeting for the eighth time in program history on Friday, where Billikens hold a narrow 4-3 advantage. The 'Cats avoided the sweep last season, thanks to Durin O'Linger's complete game shutout in the Saturday affair, the first of his career.
Saturday was a pitcher's duel stalemate until the top of the ninth, when the 'Cats cranked out two singles and capitalized on a passed ball to allow then-junior Jake Sidwell to plate the only run of the game. Sidwell and classmate Brian Fortier each collected two hits in the victory.
The 'Cats lost on Friday 2-1, and dropped the rubber match 12-2 Sunday.
Senior Will Robertson is hitting .417 lifetime against the Billikens, while classmates Brian Fortier posts a .333 clip and Tyler Agard carries a .286.
THE DAVIDSON RUNDOWN
Senior Will Robertson had an outstanding April, posting a .434 batting average after tallying 33 hits, including 10 doubles, a triple, and six homeruns. Robertson scored 23 runs and recorded 21 RBI, collecting 63 bases over the course of the 17 games. During the month, Robertson set a new program milestone, registering the longest hitting streak in school history, which he currently holds at 20 games.
Likewise, classmate Durin O'Linger also had a fantastic month, where he went 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA. He allowed just four runs and struck out 26. He tossed a complete game shutout at NC A&T (4/21), matching his career-high with nine Ks. He followed that up with an eight-inning, two-run outing at GW (4/28).
Saturday, the 'Cats will honor the ten seniors on the 2017 roster: pitchers Durin O'Linger, Cody White, Westin Whitmire, and Chase Plebani, outfielders Will Robertson and Cameron Marshall, infielders Brian Fortier and Lukas Pracher, utility man Tyler Agard, and catcher Jake Sidwell. The six position players have combined for 415 hits, 268 runs, 71 doubles, 32 home runs, and 225 RBI, and the four hurlers have tallied 290 strikeouts and 23 saves. The group were members of the 2014 team, which recorded the most wins in school history (29), and helped lead the 'Cats to their first ever postseason championship last season. The crew has garnered multiple accolades, such as five Atlantic 10 Player/Pitcher of the Week honors, two national Player of the Week honors, and have earned the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll a combined 11 times. The class has also chiseled themselves into the record books as the winningest class in school history. Sidwell became the first Wildcat catcher to ever be named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, as well as the first Davidson player to ever be taken in the MLB Draft out of high school. Whitmire ranks third all-time with 18 saves, needing just four for second place.
SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS
Saint Louis enters the weekend on a 25-16 (7-6 A-10) record and have won four of their last seven contests. The Billikens boasts six players with an above .300 average, led by freshman Jake Garella's .341 clip, but veteran Trent Leimkuehler boasts a team-best 51 hits at .321. Junior catcher James Morisano tops the team with nine long balls, while fellow slugger Parker Sniatynski carries a squad-high 33 RBI. SLU ace Miller Hogan ranks near the top of the league with a 1.53 ERA, and sits right behind Davidson's Durin O'Linger with 64 strikeouts. Like the 'Cats, the Billikens took two of three from league foes St. Bonaventure and suffered a shortened two-game sweep at Rhode Island.
