COLUMBIA, S.C. – Sophomore Josh Hudson delivered a dynamic pitching performance, but Davidson baseball dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to No. 18 South Carolina Tuesday at Founders Park in Columbia. The Wildcats limited the Gamecocks to just three hits in the contest.
Davidson drops to 18-16 on the season, while South Carolina improves to 23-13.
Hudson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and was cruising, until a review on a foul homerun delayed the game. Upon returning to action, the Gamecocks turned in a double to right center to end Hudson's bid.
Senior Will Robertson homered in a 2-for-5 day- his sixth in his last nine games- and junior Cam Johnson also picked up two hits, including a double. Veteran Brian Fortier also homered, his league-leading 11th of the year, as the 'Cats turned in seven hits against the nationally-ranked squad.
Davidson gave Hudson some cushion in the fourth, when Robertson belted a leadoff bomb, and Fortier followed, also sending the ball over left center.
With a 2-0 lead, Davidson looked to add insurance the following frame, getting the bases loaded courtesy of a Johnson single, junior Alec Acosta reaching on a strikeout wild pitch, and Fortier walked, but were unable to bring anyone home. The 'Cats ended up stranding a total of 10 baserunners on the day.
After the leadoff double to break the no-hitter in the seventh, South Carolina followed up with a walk and a sacrifice bunt to get two runners into scoring position. Enter the Gamecocks' Jacob Olson, who plopped a single into the gap in right center to bring both runners home and tie the game.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Gamecocks again used a walk and double to attack. With one out and a runner on second, Jonah Bride, the culprit who broke the no-hitter earlier, laced another double into the corner of left field, allowing what was ultimately the winning run to score.
The Wildcats return to action Friday, traveling to Greensboro, N.C., to face North Carolina A&T. The two will face off in Davidson on Saturday, and return to Greensboro Sunday to complete the series.
