RICHMOND, Va. – Although leading through five and a half innings, Davidson baseball dropped its Sunday contest with VCU 11-4 at the Diamond in Richmond.
The Wildcats slip to 18-15 on the year and 8-7 in league action, while the Rams move to 21-15 and 10-2.
The senior duo of Brian Fortier and Will Robertson led the bats for the 'Cats, as Fortier went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Robertson turned in his fifth straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with a home run and run scored. Sophomore Justin Lebek recorded his second triple of the season.
The 'Cats looked to be in control, taking an early 3-0 lead in the third inning. Lebek took three bases off a ball ripped to the right field corner and came home on a RBI-groundout from senior Tyler Agard. Davidson tacked on two more when sophomore Max Bazin (who boarded on a free pass) and junior Alec Acosta (who reached via error) both came home courtesy of a single fired back up the middle from Fortier.
After the Rams scored in the bottom of both the third and fourth innings to make it a one-run contest, Robertson belted his seventh longball of the season to add some insurance in the fifth. The homer is Robertson's fifth in his last eight games. Robertson is hitting .710 lifetime against the Rams.
VCU stole the lead in the bottom of that frame, scoring three times off of three walks and a pair of singles. They went on to add to their lead, plating five runs in the sixth and one in the eighth.
Davidson continues its road trip Tuesday, traveling to Columbia, S.C., to face No. 11 South Carolina.
