THE SERIES
Davidson and South Carolina began playing in 1902, with the Gamecocks owning the series 46-23. Last year, the 'Cats suffered a 15-2 loss, where then-rookie Eric Jones doubled and picked up an RBI, and then-juniors Will Robertson and Tyler Agard each picked up a hit. Agard and classmate Cam Marshall, who pinch ran, scored the two runs for Davidson, and then-sophomore Andrew Born also picked up a hit in a pinch-hit opportunity. Cody White and Dan Spear each had solid relief outings, where they tossed a scoreless inning each. White fanned two and Spear also picked up a K.
THE DAVIDSON RUNDOWN
Davidson snapped a six-game winning streak and dropped their second A-10 series of the year after falling in the latter two games on the road at VCU. The 'Cats picked up the 5-4 win Friday, defeating the league's leader in wins in the process.
Senior Will Robertson continues to carry a hot bat, going .500 last week, belting three homers while scoring six times and bringing in seven RBI. Robertson finished the weekend hitting .710 against the Rams in his career.
Davidson is third in the league in team hitting (.278) and second in home runs (30) and slugging percentage (.413). The team also ranks third with 206 runs scored and third in on-base percentage (.366).
The trio of Robertson, classmate Brian Fortier, and sophomore Justin Lebek enter the week carrying an above .300 batting average. Fortier and Lebek have rotated leading the team in hitting this season (which now belongs to Robertson), and are ranked both in the tops of the league and nationally in various offensive categories.
Davidson bests the Gamecocks in six different categories- runs, RBI, slugging %, on-base %, batting average, and walks.
SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS
South Carolina is coming off a win at No. 13 Mississippi State, taking the Sunday contest 6-1 after dropping the previous two games in the series. The Gamecocks are led by sophomore infielder LT Tolbert, who is hitting at a .333 clip and has a team-best 27 RBI. Classmate Jacob Olson tops the team with five homers, and fellow second-year Chris Cullen has a squad-best .500 slugging percentage. The pitching staff has accumulated a stellar 357 strikeouts, and are limiting opponents to just a .222 average.
