DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball suffered the series sweep Sunday, falling 9-1 to 2016 Atlantic 10 champions Rhode Island at Wilson Field.
It was the first time the 'Cats have been swept since joining the league in 2015. They drop to the .500 mark at 11-11 (2-4 A-10), while Rhode Island improves to the same level at 10-10 (3-0 A-10).
Senior Brian Fortier had two of the 'Cats four hits, pulling singles in both left and right field. Classmate Jake Sidwell scored the lone Davidson run, doubling in the ninth and coming home after a Rams' error. The other hit on the afternoon was recorded by junior Cam Johnson.
A grand slam in the opening frame put Rhody up early, and the team continued to add insurance, scoring two runs in the second, and one in each the fourth and fifth innings.
The trio of relief pitchers ZJ Zabinski, Cody White, and Peyton Hopkins shined, as White and Hopkins faced the minimum in an inning of work each. White struck out two, and Zabinski and Hopkins each added a K.
The 'Cats return to action Tuesday, traveling to Durham, N.C., to face their third ACC opponent of the year in Duke, the four-year playing site of current Wildcats' assistant coach Ryan Munger. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
