DURHAM, N.C. – A middle-innings rally wasn't enough to overcome an eight-run third, as Davidson baseball dropped its midweek contest with Duke 8-6 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Tuesday. The two teams move to opposite ends of the .500 spectrum, as Davidson drops to 11-12 and Duke improves to 14-13.
Two Wildcats turned in their first collegiate home runs, as freshman designated hitter Brett Centracchio mashed one to right field to get Davidson on the board, and sophomore Justin Lebek followed that up with a long ball to left center the following inning.
Lebek went 3-for-4 on the day, turning in his third three-hit game of the season, while scoring twice and adding three RBI. Sophomore Cam Johnson collected two hits, and senior Jake Sidwell scored twice in the contest.
After Duke took an overwhelming 8-0 lead in the third, the 'Cats began to claw back. Hitless until the fifth, Sidwell broke the blank, lacing a single down the right field line. Lebek moved him over with a single of his own, and Centracchio brought them both home with a ball he sent soaring over the right field wall.
Davidson continued to chip away, scoring twice the next frame after Sidwell walked and Lebek belted a round-tripper to left center. They added another run in the eighth, after sophomore Eric Jones singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on yet another Lebek hit.
Davidson used 10 pitchers in the affair, as the final eight arms combined for just two hits and allowed no runs.
The 'Cats return to action Friday at home at Wilson Field welcoming Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's for a three-game weekend series.
