DAVIDSON, N.C. – Led by freshman designated hitter Brett Centracchio's grand slam, Davidson baseball snapped a six-game skid, defeating Saint Joseph's 10-7 Friday at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats move to .500 once again at 12-12 (3-4 A-10) while SJU slips to 5-12 and 0-1 in league action.
Centracchio blasted his second homer in as many games, while senior Brian Fortier also added four RBI, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Juniors Cam Johnson and Alec Acosta also collected two hits apiece. Johnson scored three times and Acosta added two runs.
Senior Westin Whitmire picked up his fifth save of the season, and sophomore reliever Andrew Ashur recorded his first win of the year, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Starter Durin O'Linger fanned seven in the effort.
The Hawks wasted no time getting on the board, as a bases-loaded walk brought in the first run during the opening frame.
The 'Cats replied just as fast, scoring in the bottom of the inning, after Johnson, who walked, came home on an RBI groundout from Fortier.
Davidson then took the lead in the third, after senior Will Robertson reached via error, moved to third on a double by Acosta, and both came home on a monster double to deep center from Fortier.
The 3-1 lead was held until the top of the fifth, when the Hawks rallied with two outs to plate four runs to steal the lead back.
Down 5-3 heading into the seventh, the 'Cats started working their magic right away. Johnson reached on error to lead off, and Acosta singled him to second. Fortier was then walked to load the bases, and sophomore Eric Jones connected for a ball that dropped perfectly into shallow left field to bring Johnson home. With bases still juiced, senior catcher Jake Sidwell took a hit-by-pitch to allow Acosta to plate the equalizer.
Enter Centracchio, who took the third pitch of the at bat and sent it soaring over the right field fence, just to the right of the deck, for a grand slam. The last grand slam hit by the 'Cats was Fortier's during last year's A-10 Championships.
Davidson plated an insurance run in the eighth, after Johnson came home on a sacrifice fly from Fortier.
Things got prickly in the final frame as the Hawks fought back. With one away, a solo shot put them in focus, now down 6-10. A walk, error, and single sequenced another Hawk home, but Whitmire forced a popup and groundout to cut off the threat and close out the 10-7 victory.
The Wildcats face SJU again Saturday, with first pitch slated for 2:00 p.m.
