DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball opened up Atlantic 10 play in strong fashion, taking the series against St. Bonaventure Saturday. The two teams resumed a halted game from Friday, and played their regularly scheduled Saturday showdown, where the 'Cats won both contests by a 9-2 mark.
The offense was led by a pair of underclassmen, as sophomore designated hitter Eric Jones turned in four hits across the two games, including a home run and a double, and junior outfielder Cam Johnson also tallied four hits, including a home run. Johnson scored three times and added three RBI, while Jones also plated three runs and brought in two more.
Dynamic pitching paced the 'Cats, with junior Evan Roberts tossing the complete five innings of the halted Friday affair, where he allowed just one run and scattered three hits, and classmate Josh Smutzer picked up his fourth win of the year in the nightcap. Sophomore Austin Leonard worked 3.2 fantastic innings of relief, picking up his first save of the year.
Davidson looks for the sweep Sunday, slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
GAME 1: DAVIDSON 9, ST. BONAVENTURE 2
Senior Tyler Agard achieved a career-best, tallying two doubles while scoring twice and adding three RBI. Senior catcher Jake Sidwell made his long awaited return from injury in grand fashion, going 2-for-4, scoring and bringing in the first run of the game for the 'Cats.
After senior Brian Fortier led off the bottom of the second with a double and moved to third on a Jones single, Sidwell fired a ball to dead center to bring him home and get Davidson on the board.
The 'Cats took a 4-1 lead into the rain delay, scoring three more times in the fourth. Agard doubled home sophomores Justin Lebek and Max Bazin, who reached on a fielder's choice and a walk, and scored himself on a sacrifice fly from senior Will Robertson.
Things picked up right where they left off Saturday, as Sidwell scored in the fifth inning after reaching on a fielder's choice and coming home on a Lebek double. The 'Cats scored four more runs that inning, after Agard doubled home Lebek and Johnson hit a three-run shot.
Senior Durin O'Linger made the start Friday, showing sharp stuff through four innings, where he walked just two batters and fanned five.
GAME 2: DAVIDSON 9, ST. BONAVENTURE 2
Bazin led the 'Cats with three hits, while Jones scored three times. Johnson and Robertson each collected two hits and plated two runs.
Davidson followed the same pattern from the first game, taking the early lead in the second inning. Jones led off the frame with a walk and advanced two bases on a throwing error from a failed pick-off attempt, then came home via a Sidwell sac fly.
The game was tied briefly thanks to a sac fly, but the 'Cats found success in the fifth inning once again, scoring four runs courtesy of the long ball. Johnson led off with a bunt single, coming home on a round-tripper from Robertson. Junior Alec Acosta then walked, and Jones repeated the sequence, finding the same wide open left field hill to park his ball.
The Wildcats repeated the process in the sixth, plating four more runs. Johnson walked to lead off the inning and scored on an Acosta sac fly, Lebek worked a bases loaded full-count walk to bring home Robertson, and Bazin delievered a single through the right side to bring home both Fortier and Jones, who had each also been awarded free passes.
The Bonnies left bases loaded in the sixth and cranked a solo shot in the seventh, but the threat ended there.
