Wildcats Fall Sunday to St. Bonaventure

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball was unable to pull off the sweep Sunday, falling 17-4 to St. Bonaventure in the opening weekend of Atlantic 10 action at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats were limited to four hits, while senior Will Robertson scored twice. They slip to 11-7 on the season, and 2-1 in A-10 play. The Bonnies move to 6-7, 1-2.
The Bonnies were paced by junior Aaron Phillips 7.1 innings, where he struck out seven, and third baseman David Hollins, who went 6-for-6, with three doubles, a homer, and eight RBI.
The Bonnies attacked quickly, plating a run in the first as Hollins brought in his first run of the afternoon.
Davidson took the lead in the bottom frame, when junior Cam Johnson led off the inning with a double he laced down the right field line. Robertson then joined him after being hit-by-pitch, and each advanced on a sacrifice bunt from junior Alec Acosta. The Bonnies then loaded the bases after intentionally walking cleanup hitter Brian Fortier. Their plan backfired after sophomore Eric Jones boarded on a walk, bringing Johnson home.
The 'Cats then took the lead after Robertson came home courtesy of a throwing error on a failed pick-off attempt.
Davidson remained in control until the fourth, when St. Bonaventure exploded with 10 runs. They tacked on two in each the fifth and seventh innings, and one in the sixth and eighth.
Robertson scored in the sixth off a sac fly from Jones, and senior Cam Marshall, who collected a pinch-hit single in the eighth for his second career hit, scored the final Davidson run, coming home on a Fortier sac fly to deep center.
In addition to Johnson and Marshall's hits, Robertson and sophomore Justin Lebek recorded the other two hits for the Wildcats.
Davidson returns to action Tuesday, traveling to High Point, N.C., for its second road contest of the season.
