DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson baseball team rallied but fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 7-6, Tuesday night at Wilson Field.
Down 3-0 at the start of the fourth, Davidson (16-13) rallied for four-straight runs, while silencing the Demon Deacons for three-straight innings to take a 4-3 lead after six, but two runs in the seventh and ninth innings secured the ballgame for Wake Forest (19-12).
Despite being edged in hits, 13-11, Davidson had four Wildcats with multiple-hit performances, including two freshmen Eric Jones (2-for-5, one run scored) and Max Bazin (2-for-4, two runs scored). But Will Craig, who also recorded the win, led both teams with three hits, five RBI and one run scored in four at bats.
Craig (1-0) was the sixth Deacon to appear on the mound, allowing two runs off two hits with one strikeout for his first win of the season. Donnie Sellers closed out the night retiring three-straight batters with one strikeout for his fifth save on the year.
Five Wildcats made an appearance on the hill for Davidson, including Cody White (0-1) who allowed the final two runs off three hits with one strikeout in 1.2 innings for the loss.
After Wake Forest raced out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, freshman Josh Hudson made an appearance on the mound and pitched three silent innings with a game-high three strikeouts, which allowed the 'Cats to make a run.
Davidson got on board in the fourth after back-to-back, two-out singles from Jones and Bazin that put runners in scoring position before Andrew Pope tripled to right center to make it a one-run ballgame.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the day following a lead-off single from Bazin before Pope reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Bazin to second. After Jake Sidwell drew a walk to load the bases, back-to-back singles from Sam Foy, who finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Brian Fortier allowed Davidson to take a 4-3 lead.
After two Wake Forest runs in the seventh, the 'Cats continued to rally as Sidwell led-off with a walk. Then Fortier singled up the middle before Alec Acosta's ground out tied the ballgame. In the next at bat, Tyler Agard singled to short, which scored Fortier and Davidson took another one-run lead.
But the Demon Deacons started their final at bat with a triple that eventually led to two runs off three hits that secured the ballgame.
Davidson will return to Wilson Field this weekend with a three-game series against George Washington, which starts Friday, April 8 at 6 p.m.
