DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite a perfect 4-for-4 performance for freshman Max Bazin, a three-run homerun by Ryan McNally helped Fordham to a 7-4 win over the Davidson baseball team Sunday to close out the weekend series at Wilson Field.
With the game tied at two, the Rams (22-20, 8-4 A-10) started off the sixth inning with back-to-back singles before McNally homered down the left-field line that gave Fordham a 5-2 lead.
Another run crossed in the sixth and one in the eighth for the Rams, before Davidson (21-19, 8-7 A-10) rallied for two runs off three hits in the eighth but it wasn't enough to overcome the lead.
The Wildcats were edged in hits, 12-10, but left 12 on base, while both teams committed an error. Matthew Kozuch joined Bazin, who recorded his fifth multi-hit performance, in the four-hit column to lead the Rams, while Jake Sidwell and Sam Foy recorded two hits apiece for Davidson.
On the mound, Reiss Knehr (1-0) pitched 1.2 innings in relief and allowed just two hits for the win. Three other Rams appeared on the mound, including Jimmy Murphy who gave up just one hit in the final two innings for the save.
Casey Sutherland pitched the first three innings allowing two unearned runs off four hits, before Evan Roberts (2-4) appeared in relief. Roberts allowed four runs off seven hits for the loss. Josh Smutzer and Westin Whitmire also made an appearance and both recorded strikeouts for the 'Cats.
Davidson will return to Wilson Field Tuesday, April 26 to host Winthrop at 6 p.m.
