Freshmen Lead ‘Cats in Loss to Winthrop

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite freshmen Eric Jones and Max Bazin recording three-hit performances, the Davidson baseball team fell to Winthrop, 15-6, Tuesday night at Wilson Field.
Jones went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, which included his first homerun of his career to lead Davidson (21-20). Bazin, the A-10 Rookie of the Week, joined Jones in the three-hit column, going 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats out hit the Eagles, 15-13, but committed five errors on the day. Three other 'Cats recorded multiple hits, while Mitch Spires led both teams with a 4-for-6, two runs scored outing for Winthrop (22-20).
Davidson got out to an early 2-0 lead with runs scored in the first two innings, which included a solo homerun from Sam Foy in the first inning that started things off. Foy finished the day 2-for-5 and picked up his second homer of the season.
But Winthrop went ahead, scoring runs in the next five innings, including four in the fifth and five in the six to secure the victory.
Eight Wildcats appeared on the mound, including Connor Gordon (1-2) who allowed four runs – three earned – off two hits for the loss. Freshmen Austin Leonard, Andrew Ashur, Dan Spear and Sam Reinertsen all appeared in relief and recorded scoreless outings.
Four Eagles appeared on the mound, including Thad Harris (4-3) who allowed just one run off three hits with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings for the win.
The Wildcats will hit the road for a weekend series at Saint Louis starting Friday at 7 p.m.
