RICHMOND, Va. – Lee Miller went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Davidson baseball team to a 14-2 victory over Richmond in game two of the weekend series Saturday at Pitt Field.
Davidson (19-16, 7-4 A-10) put in an impressive performance offensively, scoring 14 runs off 14 hits, while Richmond (18-15, 5-6 A-10) struggled on the field committing five errors.
Jake Sidwell, who went 3-for-5 with three runs scored for his second-straight three-hit performance, joined Miller in the three-hit column, while three other Wildcats recorded multiple hits, including freshman Eric Jones, who finished with a season-high four RBI.
Richmond got into some early trouble on the mound, hitting the first Wildcat before walking three in addition to Davidson's three hits that led to an early 3-0 lead.
The Spiders cut the score to one in the second off three hits, including a double from Aaron Newman, which was the lone extra base hit for Richmond.
But after a RBI single from Jones in the third, Davidson secured the contest in the fourth by scoring three runs off three hits, including a two-RBI double from Miller.
Three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth capped off the offense for the Wildcats.
On the mound, Durin O'Linger (5-2) had an impressive day, allowing just two runs off six hits with six strikeouts in the first 7.2 innings. The senior silenced the Spiders throughout four innings, retiring 11 straight before being relieved by Evan Roberts.
Roberts faced the final batter in the eighth, before Andrew Ashur closed out the day with retiring the final three Spiders.
Zach Grossfeld (4-3) was the first of five Spiders to appear on the mound, allowing seven runs – four earned – off six hits with four strikeouts for the loss.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow, April 17 with a 12 p.m. first pitch.
