RICHMOND, Va. – Despite Brian Fortier going 5-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored, the Davidson baseball team fell to Richmond, 8-7, Sunday to close out the weekend series at Pitt Field.
Trailing by four after seven, Davidson (18-17, 7-5 A-10) rallied for three runs in the eighth with the help of two doubles, but it was not enough as Richmond (19-15, 6-6 A-10) scored multiple runs in the fourth and sixth innings to secure the win.
Davidson edged Richmond in hits, 15-14, while both teams committed two errors. Fortier led both squads with five hits, while Lee Miller finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBI with two other Wildcats picking up multiple hit performances.
Daniel Brumbaugh led Richmond with a 4-for-5 outing, while pitching the final two innings for the save.
The Wildcats continued with starting off the day strong, scoring the first for the third-straight game. After a single from Alec Acosta, back-to-back singles from Miller and Fortier scored the shortstop.
Richmond made it a 2-1 ballgame in the second after a sacrifice fly led to a Davidson error that scored two.
After the Wildcats regained the lead off two runs in the fourth, Richmond responded in the next at bat with the help of another Davidson error that sparked three runs for a 5-3 lead.
The Spiders extended their lead to four with two runs in the sixth before runs were traded in the seventh, but three runs from the Wildcats made it a one-run ballgame in the eighth.
After Sam Foy led off with a walk followed by a single from Acosta, back-to-back doubles from Miller and Fortier scored three runs to cut the Richmond lead to 8-7, but the rally was not enough.
On the mound, Casey Sutherland (1-3) started the first 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs off six hits with one walk for the loss. Evan Roberts, Josh Smutzer and Westin Whitmire appeared in relief.
Dan Martinson (6-1) recorded the win for the Spiders, pitching the first 5.2 innings and allowing three runs – two earned – off 10 hits with four walks.
The Wildcats will continue on the road when they travel to Winthrop Tuesday, April 19 for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
