DAVIDSON, N.C. – Andrew Pope's three-RBI triple in the sixth helped lead the Davidson baseball team to an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over George Washington in the series finale Sunday at Wilson Field.
The third baseman finished the day going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Davidson (18-14, 6-3 A-10) found itself down 4-3 after five, before five runs crossed off four hits in the sixth, which eventually secured the ballgame. George Washington (12-21, 3-3 A-10) sparked a late rally in the eighth and came within one, but it was not enough to overcome the 'Cats.
The Colonials out hit Davidson, 15-9, with the help of Matt Cosentino who went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Three other Colonials tallied two-or-more hits, while Pope was the lone Wildcat with a multiple-hit performance.
On the mound, Evan Roberts (2-3) allowed just two runs off seven hits with three strikeouts in five innings in relief for the victory. Westin Whitmire closed out the final 1.2 innings, allowing two runs, which were both unearned, with one strikeout.
Jacob Williams (2-3) was one of four Colonials to appear on the mound and allowed two runs – both earned – off three hits with one strikeout in 0.2 innings for the loss.
After George Washington raced out to a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth inning, Davidson got on board when Alec Acosta singled to left field that scored Sam Foy, who led off with a walk. But the Colonials extended the lead in their next at bat off a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
After two runs in the fifth, the Wildcats continued with the momentum in the sixth thanks to Brian Fortier, who led off with a double down the left-field line, followed by Lee Miller who singled up the middle. The Colonials intentionally walked Aaron Tovksy to load the bases, before Max Bazin singled to shortstop that tied the score at four. Pope then tripled to right-center field to score the go-ahead-runs, before Andrew Born sacrificed flied to give Davidson the 8-4 lead.
After a silent seventh inning, George Washington rallied for three runs which were sparked by a Davidson error but it was not enough.
The Wildcats will return to Wilson Field Tuesday, April 12 to host Duke at 6 p.m.
