Davidson Edged By George Mason, 3-2, In Series Opener

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Davidson baseball team was edged, 3-2, by the George Mason Patriots in the series opener Friday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
The loss was the first for Davidson in six A-10 contests as the Wildcats fell to 22-17 overall and 11-8 in the league. George Mason improved to 19-23-1 on the season and 8-8 in the conference.
Play was about even as the two teams each tallied six hits, while the Patriots committed one error. Third baseman Ben Arkin led both squads with a 2-for-4 performance and two RBI.
After a quiet first three innings, Davidson was the first to get on board with two runs in the fourth. Designated hitter Ryan Lowe started things off with a single to left center, before right fielder Lee Miller drew a walk. After shortstop Alec Acosta picked up a SAC bunt, Arkin sent one up the middle for the two-run score.
Following its first run in the fifth, George Mason scored two in the sixth. After two Patriot hits, RHP Clark Beeker threw a wild pitch that tied the score before a Patriot picked up a RBI ground out to second that secured the win.
On the mound, Beeker threw the first seven innings and allowed all three runs off six hits with five strikeouts for the loss. RHP Westin Whitmire and LHP Evan Roberts combined for the final inning.
Three Patriots saw the mound for George Mason, including LHP Jake Kalish who allowed all two runs off six hits with 10 strikeouts for the win.
The two teams will return to the field tomorrow, May 2 at 2 p.m.
