Hot Start Lifts ‘Cats Over George Mason, 12-8, In Game Two

FAIRFAX, Va. – Seven runs in the first two innings helped lift the Davidson baseball team over the George Mason Patriots, 12-8, in the second game of the series Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
The win improves Davidson to 23-17 overall and 12-8 in the league, while George Mason fell to 19-24-1 on the season and 8-9 in the conference.
Davidson out hit George Mason, 18-11, while committing two errors compared to the Patriots' one. The Wildcats' 18 hits, which included seven doubles, were both season highs. Designated hitter Ryan Lowe matched his career-high with five hits, four RBI and one run scored in six at bats to lead both squads.
First baseman David Daniels also matched his career high with four hits, including three doubles, three runs and one RBI in six at bats. Three other Wildcats picked up multiple hit performances, including right fielder Lee Miller, third baseman Ben Arkin and catcher Jake Sidwell.
The 'Cats started things off with five runs off four hits in their first at bat. Davidson fired off three-straight hits, including doubles from Lowe and Miller that both scored a run.
After two Wildcats got on base, left fielder Nathan Becker hit another double that scored two before center fielder Cameron Johnson picked up a sac fly to give Davidson the early 5-0 lead.
The 'Cats kept the momentum and scored two more off two hits in the second. After Daniels doubled to right center, Lowe fired one up the middle that scored the Daniels and second baseman Sam Foy (walked) and Davidson was up 7-0 after two at bats.
George Mason then matched the Wildcats' lead with two runs in the second, before scoring five runs off five hits and a Davidson error to tie the score in the third.
Three runs in the fifth eventually secured the win for the 'Cats. After a RBI single from Sidwell, an error on the Patriots' second baseman scored a run before Daniels tallied the second double of the inning that gave Davidson the 10-7 lead.
On the mound, LHP Rob Bain started the first 5.2 innings for the Wildcats, allowing eight runs off 11 hits with two strikeouts for his fourth win of the season. After Connor Gordon pitched 2.0 innings, RHP Matt Saeta threw the final 1.1 innings for his fourth save of the season.
Four Patriots saw the mound for George Mason, including LHP Tyler Kardas who allowed three runs off four hits with one strikeout in 2.2 innings for the loss.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
