Third Season
Abe Woldeslassie begins his third season as the Director of Operations for the Davidson men’s basketball team.
“It is an honor to be a part of the Davidson College community,” said Woldeslassie. “Davidson is committed to academic and athletic excellence and I am grateful for this opportunity.”
Prior to Davidson, Woldeslassie spent the 2012-13 season as the director of operations at Dartmouth College, a member of the Ivy League. He helped coordinate on-campus recruiting visits, team travel, film exchange and a number of other behind-the-scenes duties during his time in Hanover, New Hampshire.
Prior to his arrival at Dartmouth, Woldeslassie spent two years as an assistant coach at Bowdoin College. He helped the Polar Bears post a 31-18 record during his stay in Maine. Among his duties were recruiting, opponent scouting, organizing team volunteer opportunities and assisting with summer camps. His recruiting classes include Lucas Hausman, the first men’s basketball player in Bowdoin history to earn NESCAC Player of the Year honors as well as John Swords, a 2-time NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year. Bowdoin earned the 2 seed in the 2015 NESCAC tournament, the highest seed in program history.
“Abe comes to Davidson with an impressive background and outstanding work ethic,” said McKillop. “He was fortunate to work for outstanding head coaches at Dartmouth and Bowdoin. He is very well prepared to take on this opportunity at Davidson.”
A 2008 graduate of Macalester College, Woldeslassie earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology. In his two years on the Scots basketball team, he started all 50 games while averaging 17.2 points and 5.4 assists per game. Twice he was named to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) First Team, and twice he led the league in assists.
Woldeslassie, a Minneapolis native, broke into the coaching ranks as an assistant coach at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the summer of 2009, he held a head coaching position at the Basketball Training Institute in Pasadena, California.
During the summer of 2015, Woldeslassie led 10 college players on a goodwill tour of Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, and England through the Global Sports Academy. The team spent 8 days playing against various professional teams and finished with a 4-2 record.
