'Cats Top Richmond in A-10 Tourney, Advance to Meet Billikens

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reed Bailey and Connor Kochera combined for 47 points and the Davidson Wildcats held off Richmond 69-65 Wednesday afternoon to advance in the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Tournament inside Capital One Arena.

The 12th-seeded Wildcats, now 17-15, will face fifth-seeded Saint Louis in Thursday's quarterfinals at 2 p.m., while No. 13 Richmond finished the season 10-22.

Bailey scored a game-high 25, while navigating some late foul trouble, while Kochera chipped in 22.

The Wildcats, who swept the season series with the Spiders, had to make plays down the stretch to secure the win and did.

After Richmond's Collin Tanner cut the Wildcats' lead to 65-62 with 49.5 seconds left, Bailey converted a layup to push the lead back to five. Artis White Jr. hit another Spiders' trey to make it 67-65 with 21.3 seconds left, but after he missed a potentially go-ahead shot in the final seconds, Hunter Adam rebounded the miss and was fouled with two ticks on the clock. Adam buried the ensuing free throws to clinch it.

The opening 20 minutes featured four ties and seven lead changes before the 'Cats closed the first half with seven straight points to lead 34-32 at the break. Prior to their spurt, Richmond used a 13-3 run to open up a 30-24 advantage.

Bailey (14), Kochera (13) and Zach Laput (7) combined for all 34 of Davidson's points in the period. Laput finished the afternoon with 11 points and was the only other Wildcat in double figures.

White scored 17 and Mike Walz added 16 points and 10 boards to lead Richmond.

UP NEXT: THE BILLIKENS
• As the tournament's No. 5 seed, Saint Louis earned a first-round bye and will open postseason play Thursday.
• The Billikens enter 18-13 overall and 11-7 in league play and have won four of their last five games.
• Davidson and Saint Louis met once during the regular season, with the Billikens prevailing 57-56 in Davidson on Feb. 25. The Wildcats led for much of the game and by as many as 13, but Robbie Avila's spinning layup with 4.6 seconds left was the difference.
• Three Billikens earned A-10 postseason honors: guard Gibson Jimerson (First Team, All-Academic), Avila (Second Team) and Isaiah Swope (Third Team).
• A guard, Jimerson scores 18.3 points per game.
• Avila is one of the most versatile big men around, averaging 17.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
• Swope, a guard, scores 16.4 points per game and is among the league leaders with 4.4 assists per contest. Swope had a game-high 23 points in the matchup with Davidson last month.
