Saint Louis Edges Wildcats in A-10 Action

DAVIDSON — Robbie Avila's spinning layup with 4.6 seconds to play nudged Saint Louis past Davidson 57-56 in Atlantic 10 men's basketball Wednesday evening in Belk Arena.
The Billikens (16-12 overall, 9-6 A-10) used a 19-5 run to overcome a 13-point deficit in the final six-plus minutes to get the win, their second straight, in the teams' only meeting of the season.
Connor Kochera scored a team-high 22 to lead the Wildcats, who fell to 16-12 and 6-9 in league play.
After Avila's go-ahead bucket, the Wildcats had one last shot, but Bobby Durkin's 3-point attempt missed just before the final horn.
After the Billikens moved in front 34-33 in the second half, Davidson used an 18-4 run, including a 7-0 spurt capped by a thunderous Kochera-to-Manie Joses alley-oop dunk, to lead 51-38 with 6:31 to play, matching its largest lead of the night. Though the Billikens responded quickly and pulled to within four with an 11-2 run, a Kochera trey with 1:43 left made it 56-49. But Avila answered with a 3-pointer of his own to spark the Billikens, who scored the game's final eight points.
Davidson led by 13 four times in the first 20 minutes and 27-18 at the intermission. To start the game, Saint Louis hit just three of its first 18 shots (16.7 percent) as Davidson built a 15-5 lead and scored 11 straight points.
Davidson also held Providence to just 18 first-half points in its 69-58 win over the Friars at the Battle for Atlantis in November.
Reed Bailey also scored in double figures with 14 points.
Isaiah Swope scored all but four of the Billikens' first half points and finished with a game-high 23. Avila added 19.
