Wildcats Open Series With 6-5 Win Over Bonnies

DAVIDSON — Brendan Fritch scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning to nudge the Davidson baseball team past St. Bonaventure 6-5 at Wilson Field Friday evening.
It's the fourth straight win for the Wildcats, who improved to 16-15 overall and 7-6 in the Atlantic 10.
Davidson led 5-2 after Anthony Torreso and Scotty Edwards each hit two-run home runs in the fifth. Torreso's team-leading fifth homer gave the Wildcats the lead, and Edwards went deep three batters later.
However, St. Bonaventure (9-22, 3-10) tied it with three runs in the seventh.
Fritch then led off the eighth with a single to third base, and Wildcats Fredy Diaz (hit-by-pitch) and Jamie Daly (intentional walk) soon joined him on base. A ball in the dirt during Torreso's at-bat allowed Fritch to get home safely.
In the ninth, Simon Yochum, who pitched the final 2.1 innings and earned the win, stranded the Bonnies' potential tying run at second after a lead-off double, the only hit he allowed.
Starter Wilson Perkins turned in one of his top outings of the season. He threw six innings and struck out a season-high nine, while allowing seven hits and two earned runs.
