TYSONS, Va. — A five-run seventh inning — featuring Chris Schuchart's two-run double and Jack Cotrone's three-run home run — propelled the fourth-seeded Davidson baseball team past No. 7 Dayton 9-4 in the Atlantic 10 Tournament late Thursday night at Capital One Park.
The victory lifts the Wildcats (27-28) into an 11 a.m. contest with No. 2 George Mason on Friday.
Schuchart's bases-loaded double nearly left the yard and broke a 4-4 tie. Cotrone then followed with a towering shot to left to extend the lead.
Noah Jouras (4-for-5) hit an RBI-single in the first and scored on a balk to give the Wildcats an early 2-0 edge. Then, with Dayton leading 4-2 in the fifth, Eli Putnam blasted a solo home run, his 19th of the season, to cut into the lead, and Jouras followed with a game-tying RBI-single.
Ed Hall started on the mound and threw 3.1 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out five. Jacob Vokal (2.2 IP) and Adam Katz (3.0 IP) took it from there and limited the Flyers to two hits the rest of the way, while striking out six.
George Mason (38-20) advanced earlier Thursday with an 11-7 win over No. 6 Saint Joseph's.
The Wildcats and Patriots met in Davidson two weeks ago, with George Mason winning two of three games.
