TYSONS, Va. — Anthony Depino's grand slam helped top-seeded Rhode Island overcome a three-run Davidson lead and earn a 5-3 win on Wednesday, the second day of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Capital One Park.
With the loss, the fourth-seeded Wildcats (26-27) will now face either No. 6 Fordham or No. 7 Dayton in an elimination game Thursday at 7 p.m.
Depino's two-out grand slam to left-center capped a five-run fourth inning for the Rams, who got on the board with a Nic Notarangelo RBI-single.
Davidson struck in the first inning when leadoff hitter Cider Canon doubled, moved up on an Eli Putnam single and scored on an Anthony Torreso sacrifice fly.
The same three Wildcats helped add two runs in the third, this time when Canon singled, Putnam doubled and Torreso reached on an infield error, which allowed both runs to score.
From there, however, Rams pitcher Trystan Levesque (8.1 IP, 6 hits, 10 Ks) limited the Wildcats, who stranded two runners in the fourth.
Isaac Fix threw 5.2 innings, allowing five runs and striking out five. Simon Yochum (2.1 IP, 1 hit, 3 Ks) kept the Wildcats within striking distance down the stretch.
