Field Hockey Opens Season Friday Against Georgetown

8/29/2024 3:50:00 PM | Field Hockey

In many ways, the 2023 season was a "first time since" campaign for the Davidson field hockey team.

Seven wins? First time since 2015.

Scoring 39 goals? First time since 2016.

Four players totaling double-digit points? Yep, first time since 2016. You get it.

With much of that team returning in 2024, the hopes are lofty for the Wildcats as the season opens Friday against Georgetown. Davidson will host the Hoyas at 5 p.m. at Belk Turf Field in the first of their eight home games.

"As we kick off my sixth season here, I couldn't be more excited about Team 49," said head coach Zoe Almquist. "Every person's dedication to this team and passion for the sport has made every day we get to work together a privilege. We've really hit the ground running in terms of being open to challenging ourselves and playing with joy. I genuinely believe we have the makings of a remarkable season. Here's to a year of growth, teamwork and achieving our full potential together. Go Cats!"

Sib Naaktgeboren, a junior, returns after earning Atlantic 10 Second Team honors a year ago. She led the Wildcats with 19 points (7 goals, 5 assists) and ranked among the A-10 leaders in multiple categories, including second with 35 shots-on-goal and 3.29 shots per game. She finished the season with nine points in the last six games, and this week, she was named to the A-10 Preseason Team.

Senior Abby Pompeo, an A-10 All-Academic selection last season, is back after scoring a team-best eight goals a year ago and becoming the first Wildcat to score eight since 2016.

Matilda Collins, now a sophomore, was also a postseason honoree last season, earning A-10 All-Rookie recognition. She was key to the Wildcats' improved defense and also chipped in with three goals and three assists.

Senior Macy Curtis (11 points) and junior Hannah Merritt (10 points) also totaled double-digit points in 2023, and of the 12 Wildcats to score a goal last year, 10 return, accounting for 90 percent (35 of 39) of the goals.

In all, eight Wildcats who started at least 11 games a year ago are back, also including sophomore Ava Mickel and seniors Bella Worthington and Adriana Risi.

After hosting Georgetown, the Wildcats will welcome Towson to town on Sunday.

The seven-game A-10 slate begins Friday, Sept. 20 when Saint Joseph's visits.
