4/28/2022 5:53:00 PM | Baseball

Now midway through the 24-game Atlantic 10 Conference schedule, the Davidson baseball team will begin the second half of the league season on the road at Saint Louis this weekend.

It's a three-game matchup of the top two teams in the standings through 12 games.

Davidson, 31-8 overall, enters as the league leader with a 10-2 A-10 mark, while the Billikens (21-17) are alone in second at 8-4.

The series begins Friday at 4 p.m. (CST).

SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS
Saint Louis has won A-10 series at Fordham and at home against Richmond and St. Bonaventure, with the Billikens' sweep of the Bonnies coming last weekend. Saint Louis also took one of three games at George Mason.

The Billikens are coming off a 13-5 non-conference loss at Missouri State Wednesday night in which Billiken Kyle Fitzgerald hit a grand slam in the second inning.

Fitzgerald is the team's top hitter with a .333 average and leads the Billikens with 37 RBIs. He's hit seven home runs and has a .996 OPS.

Tyler Fogarty leads the team with a 1.004 OPS, nine home runs and 12 steals.

On the mound, lefty Trevor Harris is the league leader with 1.27 walks per nine innings, and Cameron Pferrer's six saves are second only to Wildcat Gabe Levy's seven.

CARICO SETTING THE TONE
There aren't many leadoff-hitting catchers, but Michael Carico is producing at the top of the Wildcats' lineup, while also handling most of the catching duties.

To date, he's the top offensive threat in the A-10 as the league leader in average (.424), on-base percentage (.579), slugging percentage (.871), doubles (18), runs scored (47), total bases (121) and hit-by-pitches (21). He ranks second nationally in on-base percentage, third in slugging and seventh in average. And in A-10 rankings, he's second with 14 home runs and third with 41 RBIs.

While he's the catalyst, Carico has a lot of help behind him as well.

Fellow sophomore Ryan Wilson ranks second to him in the A-10 with a .422 average and a .570 on-base percentage (third nationally). A first baseman and cleanup hitter, Wilson leads the A-10 with 37 walks, is second with 16 steals and third with 46 runs, 16 doubles and a .696 slugging percentage. He's fifth with 40 RBIs.

Senior outfielders Trevor Candelaria and Parker Nolan are sharing the load as well. Nolan, who hits third, leads the A-10 with four triples, while Candelaria, who has hit second in every game this season, ranks third with 41 RBIs and fourth with 57 hits.

ON THE MOUND
The Wildcats' pitching staff continues to hold opposing hitters in check.

Davidson leads the A-10 in multiple categories, including with a 3.58 team ERA, 7.10 hits per nine innings, a 3.09 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 1.17 WHIP.

Friday starter Nolan DeVos is the league leader with a 2.52 ERA, 75 strikeouts and 12.58 strikeouts per nine innings. Saturday starter Blake Hely is second with 68 strikeouts, and Sunday starter Ryan Feczko leads the A-10 with eight wins, a 0.99 WHIP and a 5.67 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
