RICHMOND, Va. — The Davidson baseball team added to its Atlantic 10 Conference-leading home run total and split an afternoon doubleheader with the Richmond Spiders Saturday at Pitt Field.
The Wildcats emerged with a 4-2 win in the day's first game, then fell 3-1 in the rematch.
Entering Sunday's 12 p.m. series finale, the Wildcats are 21-20 overall and 5-10 in the A-10 and have hit 53 home runs.
Game 1
Henry Koehler's two-run home run in the eighth inning was the difference in the 4-2 Wildcats' win.
Koehler's third shot of the year came with one out and Trevor Candelaria on third base, after Candelaria began the inning on second, per the extra-inning tiebreaker rules.
Richmond built a 2-0 lead until Ruben Fontes hit a solo home run to right, his team-leading 11th of the season. The Wildcats tied it at 2-2 in the sixth when a bases-loaded balk scored John Hosmer from third. Hosmer had reached on a double.
Blake Hely pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs and three hits, while striking out six and walking one. Nolan DeVos finished the final two innings and got the win, while striking out two and not surrendering a hit.
Game 2
Candelaria ended the potential shutout with a one-out solo home run in the seventh inning of the 3-1 loss. It's his third homer in four games and 11th of the year, matching Fontes for the team lead.
Otherwise, it was a quiet afternoon offensively for the Wildcats. Ryan Wilson singled in the fourth, and Koehler doubled down the right field line in the sixth, providing the only other Davidson hits.
Jake Biederman started on the mound and tossed 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs and striking out two. Will Schomberg came on to pitch the final 2.2 and allowed one hit while striking out three.
