DAVIDSON — Aleia Gisolfi-McCready's second-half goal gave Davidson the lead over Atlantic 10 leader VCU Thursday night, but the Rams rebounded to earn a 2-1 win over the Wildcats at Alumni Stadium.
Gisolfi-McCready scored in the 53rd minute off a long, high-arcing cross from Cecie Bassett, after Riley Patton started the play with a pass to the wing. The freshman from Lexington, Mass. headed it in from right of the goal for her team-leading third goal of the year.
"It's disappointing to not get the win, but we made a dynamic, athletic team work tonight," said Davidson coach Adam Denton. "We got a great goal there, and the momentum kinda changed on the penalty kick. Then we conceded a second goal, and VCU did a good job maintaining from there."
The Rams were awarded a penalty kick in the 55th minute, and Emma Kershner converted to tie it 1-1. VCU then took the lead in the 61st minute on Samantha Jeradek's goal from just outside the 18-yard box.
The teams played to a scoreless first half and beyond, with Sophia Caruso's attempt in the 24th minute the only of the first 45 for the Wildcats. Gisolfi-McCready and Rachel Schleicher each threatened near the 49-minute mark, and Emily Smith made a point-blank save in the 41st to keep it 0-0 at the half.
