DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's soccer team picked up its second win of the year as it claimed a convincing 3-0 shutout victory over reigning Big South Champion USC Upstate Sunday at Alumni Stadium.Â
The 'Cats improved to 2-0 on the young season following their first home triumph.Â
"It's been a great opening week for the team," said head coach Riley Piechnick. "I thought we put together two solid performances against tough competition. To have five goals from five different players and a shutout is really exciting heading into week two. We know it's early and there's still progress to be made, but we're off to a strong start and look forward to building on that."Â
Dakota Lyons opened the offensive onslaught for Davidson playing a pass from SJ Pak in stride to the lower right side of the goal out of reach from Spartan starting goalkeeper Marley Gerber in the 10th minute of action.Â
The combination of Savannah Pruitt to Kiera Pohan on a corner kick execution (26:33) lifted the 'Cats to a 2-0 lead with less than half the time remaining in the first half. The goal was the first of Pohan's career.Â
Rookie, Grace Stair was the goalkeeper of record for the Wildcats and in her first start made one save over the opening 45 minutes before giving way to Allie Moore who faced just one off target shot attempt in the closing 45 minutes of the match.Â
The 'Cats were able to put the game out of reach from the Spartans with a made free kick from the foot of Annaliese Mann in the 71st minute. Maddy Decola came off the bench for the USC Upstate to take their lone shot on goal.Â
Overall, Davidson held advantages over USC Upstate in shots (8-5), shots on goal (4-1) and corner kicks (4-3).Â
Up Next
Davidson will get back on the road to face in-state opponent Appalachian State in non-conference action 6 p.m. Aug. 21.Â
