DAVIDSON - Kiera Pohans's goal in the 33rd minute of the first half Sunday afternoon was the difference maker in the Davidson women's soccer team's win over NC State at Alumni Stadium.
Pohan's second career goal, and second straight on the Wildcats' home field, helped deliver the 'Cats their first defeat of an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since 2008, as well as its first triumph over the Wolfpack since 2000.
"That was a big time result for our program," said head coach Riley Piechnick. "We knew going in that we had to be organized defensively and capitalize on opportunities when they did come. I thought we executed that well and fought hard for the entirety of the game. Kiera came up huge with the goal in a pressure moment and shout out to the defensive unit for getting the shutout. There is a good energy with the team right now and we are excited about the direction we are heading."
The junior forward's goal came after a goal kick from Allie Moore the was nicely headed up field by Sophia Whiddon in order for Pohan to outrun her NC State defender and have an open net shot.
Aiding in the offensive efforts were Whiddon and SJ Pak who each took one strike on goal.
The Davidson defensive line was nothing short of impressive over the notable win, holding the Wolfpack to just two shots over the first half and successfully defending eight total in the second including four on target attempts. Grace Stair played the opening 45 minutes for the 'Cats making one save while Moore closed out the win with four saves.
Annaliese Mann and Olivia Bestic were a vital part of the Wildcat back line as they were the lone Davidson players to see the field for the entire 90 minutes.
Erica Roberts led the charge for NC State on offense taking three total shots all of which were on goal while Olivia Pratapas and Emily Earles split time in goal for the Wolfpack.
Over the match, NC State held advantages in shots (10-4), shots on goal (5-3) and corner kicks (5-4).
