Wildcats' Win Streak Ends With Winthrop

DAVIDSON — Brett Centracchio hit his third home run of the season to give Davidson an early lead Wednesday night at Wilson Field, but the Wildcats generated little offense from there in a 10-3 loss to Winthrop.
 
The setback is the first of the year for the Wildcats, who opened the season 7-0 for the first time since 1907. The midweek clash featured two of the NCAA's 19 teams that entered the week unbeaten, and Winthrop improved to 8-0 for the first time since 1987.
 
After Centracchio's shot to right, which scored Matt Frey, the Eagles answered with three runs in the second inning and one each in the third and fourth. Davidson pitcher Jake Biederman settled in after the fourth and, in all, pitched five innings in relief to keep it close for much of the night.
 
But the Eagles added five runs in the top of the ninth on four hits and an error to put it away.
 
Parker Nolan provided the Wildcats' final run in the ninth, when he drove in Frey on a groundout to third.
 
Frey, the Wildcats' leadoff hitter, had three singles in five at-bats, and Greg Lowe also had multiple hits (2-for-4).
 
Walker Imwalle made his first start on the mound. The left-hander made quick work of the Eagles in the first before running into trouble in the second.

Matt Levenson and Ethan Fewell had three hits apiece to lead the Eagles, who will host Davidson on May 6.

The Wildcats host Lafayette in a three-game series beginning Friday at 5:30 p.m. (note new start time).
