Fresh off a series win over Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island, the Davidson baseball team is back in action Tuesday night.
Â
The Wildcats (16-15) welcome Presbyterian (18-18) in non-conference play, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. at Wilson Field.
Â
It's the second of three meetings this season between the Wildcats and Blue Hose.
Â
Davidson won the teams' March 19 meeting 4-1, as five pitchers struck out 12 Blue Hose batters. Trevor Candelaria, Max Bazin and Alex Mardiney had two hits each, and Candelaria led the way by driving in two runs. The Wildcats will visit Presbyterian April 23 for a 3 p.m. game.
Â
Â
Facing Sutherland no walk in the park
Senior right-hander Casey Sutherland ranks second nationally in walks allowed per nine innings.
Â
Sutherland (5-0) has tossed 40.2 innings and walked three (0.66). He also ranks fifth nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (12.0), having struck out 36 batters.
Â
In his last outing, Sutherland struck out eight, scattered four hits and walked none in seven innings of work in Saturday's 7-2 win over Rhode Island. Â
Â
Â
Jones leading 'Cats hitters
Along with leading Davidson in a number of offensive categories, senior catcher/infielder Eric Jones also continues to stack up the multi-hit games.
Â
He has a team-best 14 multi-hit outings in 31 games, including four three-hit games. His latest multi-hit day came Saturday against Rhode Island, when he went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Â
Jones is also the team leader in batting average (.336), on-base percentage (.439), slugging percentage (.578) and doubles (11).
Â
Â
Frey extends streak
Second baseman Matt Frey continues to reach base.
Â
The junior from Murrysville, Pa., has now reached safely in the last 26 games. He extended the streak — which does not include reaching base on an error or a fielder's choice — with a double in the eighth inning of Sunday's second game with Rhode Island.
Â
He is second among Wildcats in batting average (.293) and on-base percentage (.402) and leads the team with 11 hit-by-pitches.
Â
Frey is almost halfway to the school record. Will Robertson set the mark at 54 straight games in 2017.
