FAMILY FUN DAY
In addition to the Bullpen Beer Garden (see below), Saturday will also feature a variety of food trucks and a bounce house for our littler Wildcats. Admission is free to all games at Wilson Field.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
VCU enters the weekend on a three-game winning streak, taking the last two of a three-game set with George Mason, and then winning their midweek showdown with in-state foe Longwood 12-2 Wednesday. The Rams are 27-14 overall, led by three hitters above .300 in Haiden Lamb, 2017 Freshman of the Year Paul Witt, and Daane Berezo. The Rams are hitting .276 collectively, but have hit just eight home runs on the season.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Davidson is 7-8 all-time against VCU, but have won the last two contests against the Rams, both coming in the 2017 A-10 Championship. In five games against VCU last year, senior Alec Acosta posts a .478 average and .870 slugging with three homers. Junior Eric Jones saw the Rams six times last year, hitting at a .500 clip and scoring four times with a .556 on-base percentage. Junior hurlers Allen Barry and Josh Hudson each faced the Rams during the 'Cats postseason run, combining for a 1.38 ERA across 14 innings.
THE BOMB SQUAD
Davidson ranks 20th in the nation in home runs (44) and 21st in home runs per game (1.13). The Wildcats have been ranked as high as fifth in the NCAA for long balls this season. 12 different 'Cats have tallied a round-tripper this season, and nine have hit more than, ranking them third in the nation in the category. Davidson has homered in 19 of its 36 games this year, hitting multiples in 11 of them and three or more in seven contests. The team is just three away from tying for ninth in program history for single-season blasts, with 12 games remaining. A year ago, the 'Cats belted 71 home runs and ranked 2nd in single-season history at Davidson.
HELLO SID, OUR OLD FRIEND
Former Davidson standout, Jake Sidwell '17, will make his return to Wilson FIeld this weekend, now serving as a member of the VCU coaching staff. Sidwell was a Rawlings Gold Glove finalist last year, as well as the first ever Wildcat to be named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List. He served as a two-year captain, and was just the second Davidson player to ever be selected for the MLB Draft out of high school. The catcher became a part of Davidson history after being on the receiving end of "The Tag", a throw from right field from roommate Will Robertson during the 2017 Regionals that saved the tying run from crossing the plate in the Championship versus No. 2 national seed North Carolina.
THE BULLPEN BEER GARDEN
Saturday will mark the third of four Bullpen Beer Gardens this season. Every Saturday during home A-10 play, fans can take part in the event, which will begin 30 minutes prior to first pitch. Anyone 21 and over can enter the garden set up in the outdoor cage and enjoy adult beverages from NoDA Brewing in Charlotte. Cash or card will be accepted.
